On Saturday, September 16, 2006, a Sikorsky S-61 helicopter -- a workhorse capable of lifting 20,500 pounds -- installed a 91-foot fiberglass spire in two sections atop the new RSA Battle House Tower in downtown Mobile, Alabama. The building is owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. The spire made the skyscraper 745 feet tall, making it the tallest building in the state and the tallest building on the Gulf Coast outside of Houston. Downtown streets were closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the installation of the spire, but the nearby Mobile River was not closed. From this vantage point, aboard our Boston Whaler boat, we had these great views. At the end, a Mobile fireboat shot its water canons in salute to the new skyscraper and the people who built it.
